ELC Named Racial Justice Award Winner

November 13 , 2013 – On Wednesday, November 13th, the YWCA of Greater Pittsburgh honored the Education Law Center as its 2013 awardee for its Legal Racial Justice Award.

“We are delighted to present the YWCA Racial Justice Award to the Education Law Center in recognition of their efforts to promote justice through equality in public education,” said Magdeline E. Jensen, Chief Executive Officer, YWCA Greater Pittsburgh. “Their outstanding initiative, dedication to eliminating racism, and the impact they’ve had on the community clearly stood out for the 2013 award.”

The Education Law Center is a non-profit legal advocacy organization dedicated to ensuring that all of Pennsylvania’s children have access to a quality public education. The Center is a statewide organization with offices in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.

“We’re honored to be recognized by the YWCA for our work,” said Nancy A. Hubley, ELC’s Pittsburgh Director. “Public education is a racial justice issue. Through our legal strategies and community engagement efforts we continue to bring these issues to light in western Pennsylvania and to press for reform.”

ELC has a long history of challenging unfair and disproportionate disciplinary practices on behalf of students of color and students with disabilities. Most recently, the Center filed a complaint with the Department of Justice on behalf of African-American students and students with disabilities seeking an investigation into statewide practices that result in the disproportionate placement of these students in alternative programs for disruptive youth.
